Iconography
The Orthodox tradition
An icon is a sacred image, « a window to the invisible ». The icon is created in an atmosphere of prayer and silence. The iconographer, in an attitude of abandon is thus guided and the image becomes saint, representing the Kingdom that is not of this world.
The creation of an icon involves several steps. Firstly the preparation of the wood, followed by the drawing, engraving and application of real gold leaves. The paint consists of a mixture of natural pigments and egg yolk. Colour is applied in a number of layers, from dark to light. Symbolism plays a big part in iconography, for example gold represents the radiance of heaven.
I don’t sell my icons directly on my website. However, you can contact me via the form to find out more and place an order.
